Located in Salt Lake City, Teen Link is a newsletter published, written, and produced by teens, for teens. This website will soon include a link to our complete online version of our printed newsletter, so everyone who is too far from East Millcreek and Holladay libraries can read and enjoy Teen Link. If there is a library near your area of Utah that you think should carry Teen Link, have them call us about getting copies. |
The
Teen Link newsletter will include: book reviews, music reviews, movie
reviews, cartoons, and horoscopes, as well as a full section of editorials,
where our writers, and teens like you, can talk about anything that interests
them. We would like to hear from you. Whether you have a review
for us, an essay, or you just want to vent a little, send us your writing
and we may publish it! Send your submissions to:

Stuff:
While Teen Link is a printed newsletter, our site allows for interactivity. In the near future, we will be adding features to our site for teens to interact with one another. The following services we have planned are:

On
the Horizon: Newsletter Preview
Online
Features:
Teen
Link Forum (Message Board)
Connect
to our Forum to see what other teens are saying! Please note that
the only protection we provide in the Forum is refusing articles with swearing,
and making sure that you are 13 years old or older. Enter the Forum
open to new ideas and opinions. If a problem arrises with offensive
material, Teen Link retains the right to remove the article from our Forum,
although we will be promoting an open exchange of ideas, under the 1st
Ammendment. Enjoy!
E-Groups: A great way to interact
If you have an email address, listen up. E-Groups is a
great web service that allows people to share ideas over email, absolutely
free. People subscribe to the group just like any other online service,
and then you are instantly linked to a group of poeple with the same interests.
Teen Link has just made a Teen Link Book Club group that we hope you will
join. Any member of the group can send an email to the group address, and
then E-Groups automatically distributes the email to all of the members
upon approval of the Teen Link Moderator. If you would like to sign up,
so you can receive email from us and other teens, about books and other
issues, follow these simple steps:
1- Send an email to [email protected] and
leave the body and subject of the email blank. You can type something in
their if you really want to, but all you need to do is send a blank email
to that address.
2- You will receive a confirmation letter from E-Groups about a minute after
you send the subscription email to us. In the confirmation email, you will
be asked to verify your subscription. If you really want to join, simply
reply to the email.
3- Once you have replied, your request will be sent to the Teen Link Moderator.
Your email address will be reviewed, and then accepted. This process could
take a few days; please be patient. After the Teen Link Moderator has approved
you, you will receive a welcome message from him. In it will be links to
the E-Group, as well as further subscription instructions.
4- Now you can just sit back and relax; any group mail will be automatically
sent to you. If you would like to send mail to the group, for any reason,
just send the email to [email protected] and
wait. Your message will be read by the Teen Link Moderator, which just
so happens to be a teen. If the message looks okay, he will approve it,
and it will be sent out to all the Teen Link Book Club Members. Enjoy!
Also--By joining E-Groups, you get access to the Teen Link Book Club file archive, contact list, chat room, polling booth, and much more!

Real.com
Ever
wanted to watch TV on your computer? Do you wish you had cable?
Now you can get some of those cable channels right over the Internet, free!
Just go to real.com and download their software for free. Then, customize
your "channels" with the content they provide. Click the channel
you want, and begin viewing! Note: a faster modem is recommended
for this, as the faster the modem, the faster the connection.

Music
can be expensive these days, so why pay for music that you can't try first?
Just go to napster.com to download their free software. Then, you
can search a database of millions of computers for songs that you like.
You can download the songs, and then play them right on your computer with

Excite.com
One
of
my personal favorites, this site is much more than a search engine! Customize
your start page with your custom colors, pictures, background,
and content!
This web portal has MORE content than any other portal
I've seen, and I've
been using the Internet for a long time. Get
things like Quotes, Weather,
Sunrise/Sunset, News, New Movies, Top Music
Sales, TV Listings, Stocks,
and Email, all on one page when you first sign on to
your web browser.
And of course, it's all free.
M-W.com
Whether
you
are doing homework, or just curious about certain words, m-w.com is
a great
place for learning. They have a very large online dictionary
and thesaurus,
to help you with all of your school vocabulary words. If you have a teacher
that gives you words and expects you to write down
the definitions, you
can make it easier on yourself with m-w.com. Just type in the word, copy
the definition, and paste it in a text editor. This allows you to save
work by cutting out the flipping through pages,
and writing it all down.
And, m-w.com can be fun too. They
have many different word games to keep
you entertained when you are bored.
Babel Fish
For students, foreign language can be tough. You may feel like you are the
only one who doesn't understand the teacher when she/he starts rattling
off in another language. And, your homework in these foreign language clases
can become difficult. With Babel Fish, you get great homework help! Babel
Fish can translate English to one of 5 languages, or it can translate from
one of the 5 languages to English. But, be careful. This cannot do a report
or other homework for you. It gets confused on some words, and doesn't
translate them right. Save yourself some embarassment; read over the paper
to make sure everything is correct. For example, if you type in "boot",
the computer translates it to Spanish as a computer boot, not a hiking boot.
You may end up looking foolish in front of your class talking about your
hiking expedition if you haven't checked for errors. Make sure that you
know what you are saying, in case a teacher is impressed and asks you a
question about what you just said.
